Director of Media and Public Relations

The Director of Media and Public Relations is charged with leveraging Perkins’ stories, thought leadership and expertise with external audiences to promote the brand and grow its national and international profile. As a critical member of the Marketing team, the Director develops and executes our media strategy; manages our public relations agency; and serves as the gatekeeper of all media and public relations initiatives. 

The successful candidate will be an experienced, results-driven individual who is passionate about Perkins’ mission and initiatives. S/he stays current with local, national and international news, particularly stories tied to education, technology and disability. S/he has a broad network of media contacts, familiarity with appropriate trade publications and proven track record in pitching and placing stories on a national level. S/he has experience with crisis management and developing and disseminating appropriate messaging in negative news and crisis situations. The successful candidate is also an excellent writer, speaker and communicator, and is experienced in coaching interviewees on those skills via media training. 

Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Expectations include the following:

  • Work with the Executive Director and others (program marketing, content and social media) to develop an integrated media strategy that addresses the organization’s priorities 

  • Oversee the public relations consulting team, setting priorities and direction 

  • Develop a strategic plan to expand and leverage the impact of our volunteer program and tour services. Oversee activities of volunteer and tour services.

  • Manage diversity and inclusion spokesperson team (speaker and interpreter) to drive strategic plan and expand audiences

  • Serve as liaison between Perkins staff, students and families and external media. Protect privacy and ensure respect for students, families and staff in dealing with the media 

  • Generate story ideas; conduct research and preliminary interviews to prepare pitches

  • Develop and expand relationships in-house with Perkins community members; network broadly with media contacts to maintain relationships and forge new contacts to reach new audiences 

  • Draft pitches and press releases; post content on website using Drupal CMS; maintain and enhance Perkins’ dynamic press pages and speaker pages on

  • Work with staff photographer to identify and compile photos for media use; guide reporters and photographers on campus and at offsite events to achieve media/PR goals while ensuring appropriate privacy and respect 

  • Other duties as assigned


  • Excellent time-management, communication, public speaking, interviewing, writing and editing skills 

  • Experience in crisis management 

  • Knowledge of AP style

  • Experience working with digital content and social media

  • Positive attitude, professionalism, flexibility

  • Willingness to operate collaboratively as a member of a team, which will require filling in for other team members on an occasional basis, as well as ability to take initiative and work independently

  • Occasional weekend and evening hours are required to cover events

Preferred skills: 

  • Knowledge of Drupal CMS

Education and/or Experience                       

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, PR or related field required, with minimum 7 to 10 years experience.
